| ...the greatest among you should be
like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves. 27 For
who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it
not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves. |

Why is it called Emmaus?
The
Emmaus Walk has always been part of the Cursillo 3 day weekend journey. We
do need to delineate between traditional Cursillo, the prison ministry of Te
Ara Pono and now this new venture – to respect the differing cultures and
styles of learning of each Cursillo strand.
Emmaus (meaning warm spring in Hebrew), as a name was chosen because of
the significance of Christ revealing himself to Cleopas and another disciple
on the road 11km NW of Jerusalem following the resurrection. His identity
unbeknown to the disciples, Christ rebukes the two for their unbelief about
the events of the last few days and gives them a Bible study on prophecies
and the Messiah. Upon reaching Emmaus, they sit down to break bread together
and Jesus is fully revealed. Without hesitation, the two disciples rush back
to Jerusalem and proclaim the good news to their friends and later all the
disciples are given a commission to evangelise.
I do not think there is a better synonym for the commission of Cursillo
than Emmaus.
Emmaus1 Theme
Servant Leadership.
Luke 22: 26-27
Concept
The programme remains true to the traditional weekend but focuses even
more than before on music - introducing new upbeat material plus those
evergreens from the Cursillo songbook. The team has the capability of
delivering through three talented musicians led by Reverend Ben Johnson-Frow,
incorporating both guitar and keyboard.
In addition, the Lay Director’s intent is to take learnings from Cursillo
and Te Ara Pono experiences and to involve the back table in the actual
table communities with the pilgrims. This way we can will keep team numbers
lower and make days busier. This style has worked on Te Ara Pono, where many
members of this new Emmaus team have had significant experience.
Table Communities will be separate male and female groups. This will
encourage Christian intimacy and the competitive juices. In addition, due to
the need for a range of learning styles and tactile, kinaesthetic
assimilation, team members have been asked to think differently as to how
they wish the pilgrims to assimilate the message of all talks. Posters may
not be the only means! Things are going to be a little different in
delivery!
